For April 2008, the number of consumer bankruptcy filings went up 47.7% over April 2007’s filings.
The increase in filings is due in part to people attempting to cope with fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis. The 92,291 bankruptcy filings in April also was a 7% increase over the number from March.
The American Bankruptcy Institute expects there to be 1 million consumer bankruptcy filings by the end of 2008. There were 850,912 bankruptcy filings in 2007 which was a 38% increase from 2006.
