Despite the defeat of a bill in the U.S. Senate that would change consumer bankruptcy laws and allow individuals facing bankruptcy to avoid foreclosure, numerous consumer advocacy groups have continued to press members of the House of Representatives for a bill that favors consumers.
The current push for changes came on the eve of a mark-up session of housing rescue legislation by the House Financial Services Committee. The measure is supported by Representative Barney Frank (D-Mass) who chairs the committee. He says the measure will not be included in the mark-up session because the measure did not pass the Senate.
The Senate’s version of the bill does not include the provision because the Senators had to strip the idea in order to win the support of Republicans. An earlier version of the bankruptcy changes failed to overrule a Republican fillibuster by 12 votes.
The reason for hope on the part of the consumer advocacy groups comes from rumors that Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-California) supports the measure. There are rumors that suggest she is working behind the scenes to bring the bill to the House floor.
