Statistics show that the number of consumer bankruptcy filings has increased 27% in the first quarter of 2008 when compared to the first quarter of 2007. This is according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.
According to a representative from the ABI, bankruptcy filings are on the rise due to increasing mortgage problems and the burden of household debt. There was a slight decrease in Chapter 13 filings in March as compared to February but there was an overall increase in the number of bankruptcy filings from the same period last year.
The bankruptcy filings are a response to the credit crisis as well as rising inflation.
