According to figures released by the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) recently, the number of consumers filing for bankruptcy protection rose 15% in February compared to January. A total of 76,120 bankruptcy cases were filed in February, over 10,000 more than in January. More people also opted for Chapter 7 protection, accounting for about 63% of all cases.

The numbers are also striking when compared to those from 2007: filings in February this year were nearly 40% higher than February of 2007.
